In December 2023, Vattenfall agreed to sell its Norfolk, UK, offshore wind zone to RWE for an enterprise value of £963m ($1.2bn). The transaction enables the continued development of three wind farms with a combined capacity of 4.2GW, sufficient to power four million British homes.
Vattenfall''s first floating solar farm in Gendringen, the Netherlands. The solar farm, with a capacity of 1.2 megawatt, was built on the site of the sand and gravel extraction company Netterden. This means that from now on, half of the annual energy consumption of the electric sand dredge and the associated sorting and processing equipment will be generated sustainably on site.
The lack of national advice leads to an uncertainty on how BESS should be designed and if and where they can be installed. Without national advice, each municipality and local rescue service must create their own advice and requirements. 2. Relative strength in BESS revenues but tough Q1 2024. Strong fundamentals are important, but investors also need a robust BESS revenue stack to earn a viable return on capital. Chart 2 shows a backtest of historical German BESS revenue stack capture for a 2hr asset, using Timera''s BESS dispatch optimisation model.
The largest operational BESS facilities in Europe are both in the UK, both owned by developer-operator Harmony Energy totalling 99MW/198MWh each. The Alfeld project is Kyon''s second large-scale BESS project approval in the space of a few weeks, after a 58MW/116MWh system was given the green light by regulators at the end of October .
Developer and optimiser Ingrid Capacity and energy storage owner-operator BW ESS have been working in partnership to deliver 14 large-scale BESS projects throughout Sweden''s grid, situated in electricity price
The NorthFlex Project objective is to introduce to the market, and scale-up the deployment of, an innovative battery system technology. The project entails development, design, and manufacturing of a scalable battery energy storage system (BESS) as well as the expansion of Northvolt''s battery systems manufacturing capabilities in Gdánsk, Poland.
Battery@Ray is a 20 MW / 45.5 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) co-located at Ray Wind Farm / The BESS will help keep the electricity grid stable and enable excess electricity to be stored and fed back into the grid / Ray Wind Farm has been generating renewable energy for over 6 years, producing around 10% of Northumberland''s energy needs

Nimbus will automate key trading processes across SMS'' battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio which currently has an operational capacity of 240MW and and a total exclusive pipeline of 860MW.
The market for BESS offtake contracts in Europe is still relatively nascent and illiquid relative to the mature RES PPA market. However conditions are improving quickly as BESS growth gathers pace. A key theme in BESS offtake contract evolution across Europe is an increased focus on downside protection after 2023-24 revenue decline.
Asset owners and investors in renewables are recognising that there is value in putting battery storage onto their solar PV or wind generation sites in future, but find the technical challenge of controlling two assets – one
Vattenfall has recently invested significant effort into BESS development, including the creation of several BESS projects in the UK, the most recent of which was brought online in October 2023. Agreeing with
owned, and operated by Vattenfall Network Solutions and provides the BESS to the DSO Vattenfall Distribution through the service "power-as-a-service" [4]. It should be noted that this is a R&D project within Vattenfall and is one of the first large scale grid connected BESS in Sweden. A schematic overview of the BESS is shown in Fig. 2.
The BESS production is part of the commissioning process for the facility in Gdansk while the funding is an extension of the US$1.1 billion convertible it signed in July 2022, covered by Energy-Storage.news at the time. A convertible note is a debt instrument that converts to equity at a later date instead of paying interest.
Northvolt has launched a new battery energy storage solution, Voltpack Mobile System– a rugged, highly modular lithium-ion battery solution envisioned as a zero-emission alternative to replace diesel generators. Vattenfall has supported the design of the system and will test and validate Voltpack Mobile System and its functionality prior to the market introduction.

With the Haringvliet hybrid energy park in the Netherlands, Vattenfall is combining the three technologies of battery, wind and solar for the first time. Vattenfall is constructing an unique battery storage facility in Uppsala, Sweden. A 22 MW battery is operational at one of Europe's largest onshore wind farms, Pen y Cymoedd.
Vattenfall operates large battery storage systems in combination with wind and solar parks at several locations in Europe. These combined systems, also known as hybrid parks, balance the feed-in for greater stability of the power grid. Vattenfall’s newly built Haringvliet Energy Park in the Netherlands is the largest hybrid park in Europe.
Vattenfall is constructing an unique battery storage facility in Uppsala, Sweden. A 22 MW battery is operational at one of Europe's largest onshore wind farms, Pen y Cymoedd. At the Princess Alexia wind farm in the Netherlands, 88 BMW batteries have been connected to form a mega battery for storing electricity from wind energy.
Vattenfall also offers batteries as fossil-free storage solutions. With battery storage, industrial customers can manage their consumption more flexibly by capping peak loads, with the so-called peak shaving. Peak shaving is a technique that lowers power consumption in times of maximum demand and thus reduces costs.
