About the energy balance tables. New Zealand''s energy production derives from both renewable and non-renewable sources. We import and export fossil fuels, which generates export revenue but also results in a dependency and vulnerability to energy commodity prices.
About 40% of New Zealand''s total greenhouse gas emissions come from our energy use. The choices we make about how we use energy in our everyday lives and businesses have an impact. Our opportunity is to build out a strong and stable energy system by prioritising energy efficiency, energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources.
In New Zealand we are fortunate to have renewable energy sources providing most of our electricity (around 82%) and around 40% of our total primary energy. This includes geothermal, hydro and wind. The other 60% of our energy comes from oil (32%), natural gas (21%) and a small amount of coal.*
In 2021, New Zealand's Total Energy Supply (TES) amounted to 829.3 petajoules (PJ), marking an 11% increase compared to 2011. The energy supply composition highlighted a diverse range of sources, with renewables being the largest contributor at approximately 42%, followed by oil at 34%, natural gas at 17%, and coal contributing about 7%.
New Zealand’s electricity is mostly generated through renewable sources such as hydro and geothermal energy. Our renewable generation is supplemented by thermal ‘peaker’ plants when demand is high or during dry periods when hydro stores are low.
Through the use of efficient technologies and processes, we can improve the affordability and reliability of New Zealand’s energy supply. Demand management is becoming increasingly important as our electricity demand increases and we transition toward greater use of renewable energy sources.
Mike Hayward said. Energy supply from renewables reached 44% in 2022, building off last year’s record high of 40.8%. This is the highest since reporting started in 1990. The closure of Marsden Point Oil Refinery in 2022 also saw New Zealand increase imports of refined oil products like petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel.
“High rainfall topped up New Zealand’s hydro lakes over the winter months, making hydro a major contributor to renewable generation. Hydro generation was 60% of all electricity for 2022, up 4.4 percentage points on 2021,” says Mike Hayward, Manager Markets, Digital, Data & Insights, at MBIE.
