Corpus Christi In 1971, Paraguay and Argentina created the River Parana Joint Commission (Comisión Mixta del Río Paraná, COMIP), which started to carry out different studies (pre-feasibility, environmental, etc.) for the Corpus project, to be located upstream of the Paraná river, close to the towns of Corpus (in the Argentina Misiones Province and Puerto Bella Vista in Paraguay. In the mid-1980s, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil signed a tripartite agreement that established the operating height of the project, which would allow to bring into line the operation of Corpus with those of Yacyreta and Itaipu. The different alternatives for this project are stillunder study. As a large hydroelectric project, with installed capacity of about 3,000 MW and annual generation of about 19,000 GWh,Corpus is a controversial project that is opposed both at the regional and social levels. In April 1996, in a plebiscite in the Misiones Province, the construction of the dam was opposed by almost 89% of the voters.

The name "Itaipu" was taken from an isle that existed near the construction site.
Paraguay generates far more power than it uses from its three dams and is able to sell the remainder; 7.1% of Paraguay''s GDP is attributed to electricity exports. Drought conditions which steadily worsened during 2020 and 2021, linked to deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest, have led to an energy crisis for operations at hydroelectric plants

This entity was constituted by ANDE (Paraguay) and ELECTROBRAS (Brazil). US$100 million were contributed in equal parts by both companies.
ANDE (Administración Nacional de Electricidad) is the state-owned entity responsible for satisfying Paraguay's electrical needs through generation, transmission, and distribution. Paraguay does not have a national oil company. Itaipu Binacional, which operates the Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam, is the largest energy company in Paraguay.
Other companies that have signed exploration concessions with Paraguay's government include H.A & E.R. Exploraciones, Pilcomayo Petróleos S.A., Hidroener Consultora, Guaraní Exploration, Union Oil, Paraguay Gas, Boreal Petróleos, Aurora Petróleos and Amerisur. Paraguay has pursued several natural gas import options.
Paraguay does not produce any natural gas. As of 2016, Paraguay was producing 4,174 barrels per day of oil. Paraguay consumed 51,000 barrels per day of oil in 2016, approximately 0.32 gallons of oil per capita daily. Paraguay imports almost all of the oil that it consumes.
Hydropower development in Paraguay has caused changes to hydrologic and ecological systems, prompting studies focused on the maintenance and preservation of wetlands, particularly in the Upper Paraguay and Paraná river basins.
