Both Ireland and Northern Ireland have set the target of generating 80% of the nations’ electricity from renewable sources.
The 75MW/150MWh battery in Poolbeg is to be the EU’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) project by energy capacity, the companies said. A second 30MW/60MWh asset is also to be developed at South Wall, with both batteries to be developed at existing ESB plants.
Last July, Neoen Renewables Ireland Ltd, a French renewable energy company, announced a 149.6MW BESS on an 8.5ac site near Portarlington, Laois. Just last week, the ESB opened a 75MW/150MWh BESS at the Poolbeg Energy Hub in Dublin. The system is Ireland’s largest so far and is part of its €300m BESS portfolio.

It is the first of four BESS projects the two companies are co-developing in Ireland, totalling 308MWh. A 60 MWh BESS in Inchicore, Dublin, is set to come online this year too, while projects in Poolbeg and South Wall are due for completion in early 2023.
